But, OH, YESSSS…. By day three of the acne and Retin A experiment, I was once again the beauty I thought I was.

Acne is a common problem that many teenagers face. It can be very embarrassing for many teenagers who are at a very delicate time in their lives. With the many pressures teenagers face, acne can be an added burden that interferes with a young person’s self esteem and confidence. For some of us, acne was not much of a concern throughout our youth.

I was one of the fortunate, clear-skinned girls in my high school. I never had to use any acne treatment or use typical medicine for outbreaks. I did get the occasional pimple and I always had the noticeable breakout right before a special event. The blemish usually appeared right on the center of my nose or right in the middle of my forehead. The blemish would sprout on the morning of a special event.

I had an acne breakout right before the Junior Miss Pageant and I think that this may have contributed to my being cut out of the final ten. It may have been the fact that I’m five-two and a little clumsy, but I like to think that the acne was the cause of the Junior Miss elimination. I may have gotten the acne because I was under stress. The blemish disappeared once I found out that I was cut.

I wasn’t the least bit nervous before my prom, but suddenly, there it was. I found a huge blemish right on the tip of my nose. Covering it up with makeup only made it worse. I didn’t let the spot on my nose ruin my night, but it was so big that my eyes were beginning to cross, being drawn to the bright-red dot. I had a good sense of humor about it. I did put my gown back on a week later to get pictures taken. I wonder if I can crop my prom date into the pictures. Acne or no acne, I still had a great time.

Today, I find myself in a new situation when it comes to unsightly blemishes. I’m approaching middle age and I use moisturizer. What I’m finding is that my skin tends to be a bit oily and I am having acne breakouts after moisturizing my face. I am very irritated that I need to combat wrinkles and acne at the same time. One of the things to look forward to as you get older is the absence of acne. I guess I still have a lot of growing up to do.

I’ve tried a variety of word processors. Word perfect, Microsoft Word, 2003 Microsoft Office, and several others have all been on my computer at times. In addition, of course, I’ve used notepad, word pad, and all of the other junk usefully included with windows. But above all, I think I like Open Office.

The best thing about open office is that it’s free. I can’t overstate that, let me repeat. All free unlike 2003 microsoft office. And this isn’t just any old junk thrown together by computer students in their spare time. It’s made by sun microsystems, one of the leading companies in the computer industry. It has all of the features of any other word processor - spell check, grammar check, auto correct, dictionary, macros, fonts, an extensive help system. As a matter of fact, I’m using it right now. But unlike other word processors, Open office is updated. So, if you get, say, 2003 Microsoft office with your computer, that may be fine for a couple of years, but soon you’ll have to buy a new word processor to keep up with all of the developments - just to be able to read documents made on other word processors. But with Open Office, you can just log onto the website and download a free update. Now that is cool.

One of the complaints about free software is that its not always compatible with the other systems more popular at the time. But I have been using open office for a long time, and have never found this to be the case. I can save files in 2003 microsoft office format, office 6.0, a bunch of different word perfect formats, just plain or encoded text, even html. And besides that, it is available for a variety of different platforms.

Really, the word processor you use isn’t that important. Many different ones will work, including 2003 microsoft office, as long as they have certain features. A dictionary spell check function is absolutely essential. It saves so much time and has become the accepted industry standard. If you don’t have a quality spellcheck, and routinely make mistakes, people will just laugh in your face when they see your files. A grammar check, while no substitute for a good proof reading, is also indespensible, as its so easy to read over your own mistakes without even noticing it. It can give you the edge you need to make more professional, sharper presentations.

Our education begins from the day we’re born. While we don’t immediately plunge into school, we’re constantly exposed to new things that help develop our minds. Academics are only part of our long journey to knowledge. By the time we enter kindergarten, we are ready to begin the reading and writing aspects, but at a slow and steady pace. Too much too soon can overwhelm and confuse us. When we hit 1st grade, we are more prepared to tackle the nitty gritty. I recall my 1st grade spelling, reading and mathematics, and how they introduced me to a whole new world.

When my daughter was born, I certainly wasn’t thinking about school yet. The formula and diapers kept me pretty preoccupied. Now that she’s seven years old, and in the first grade, academics are a major concern. One thing I noticed right away is that 1st grade spelling and mathematics are slightly different than they used to be. Now this is a good thing. Schools are constantly pushing our children to learn more at a younger age. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD is a condition that can make it hard for a child or adult to sit still, control behavior, and pay attention.
